Student Banking FAQs
How do I open an account for a minor?

You can open a Checking and Safe Debit accounts for a Youth aged 13 through 17 if it is a joint account with an adult. You may do so together online or in a branch. If the Youth is under the age of 13 or if you wish to open any other joint account with a Youth, you must do so together in a branch.

How old do I have to be to open an account on my own?

You can apply for an individual bank account if you’re 18 years or older and a legal U.S. resident. You’ll need to provide your Social Security number and a valid, government-issued photo ID.

What are the differences between checking and savings account?

A checking account is typically used for day-to-day spending and paying your bills. You can easily access your money with a debit card, ATM or check.

A savings account is meant to help you grow your money or set aside funds for a big purchase. It’s often beneficial to have both as part of your financial plan.


How can I find my routing number?

There are multiple ways, including through: Illuminus Bank Mobile App, online banking, your monthly statement, your checkbook and our routing number directory. The easiest way is to open the app and simply ask the Illuminus Bank Virtual Assistant™, “What’s my routing number?”

Illuminus Bank offers Student Banking services designed for Young Adults (18–24) and Youth (13–17). By opening a checking or Safe Debit account, users agree to the following terms and conditions:

General Terms

  • A minimum initial deposit of $10 is required for all accounts.
  • Young Adults (18–24) may apply individually or jointly, while Youth (13–17) must apply with an adult co-owner.
  • Illuminus Bank reserves the right to modify account terms, fees, and benefits at any time with proper notice to account holders.

Checking Account Terms

  • Smart Rewards Enrollment: Automatic enrollment provides benefits including waived maintenance fees, ATM fee waivers, and overdraft protection.
  • Overdraft Policy: No overdraft fees apply if the account is overdrawn by $50 or less. Overdraft protection transfers are available from eligible linked accounts.
  • ATM Usage: No transaction fees at Illuminus Bank ATMs. The first four transactions at non-Illuminus Bank ATMs per statement period are free; fees apply thereafter.

Safe Debit Account Terms

  • This account does not include Smart Rewards benefits and does not allow check-writing.
  • Overdraft Policy: No overdraft fees apply.
  • ATM Usage: No transaction fees at Illuminus Bank ATMs. Fees apply for non-Illuminus Bank ATMs.
